The Over the Hill Band

Elderly Claire (Marilou Mermans) tries to reunite with her old band and fix her relationship with her estranged son in this witty, funny and sometimes depressing look at getting old. The catch: She wants to get her son (Jan Van Looveren) to help her, so her band—which mostly sang Elvis tunes—needs to sing Sid’s type of music … which is R&B. This equals hilarity, especially in scenes where Claire and bandmates Magda (Lea Couzin) and Lut (Lut Tomsin) have to sing songs like Technotronic’s “Pump Up the Jam.” The musical scenes are pretty amazing, and the three women pull them off masterfully. The movie gets depressing toward the end, but even then, it’s a joy to watch.
