According to box office estimates, The Nut Job made over $20 million in its opening weekend. This says a lot about us as a society, specifically that we can be told time and again that certain foods will kill us or certain activities are just flat-out wrong for us, and we’ll continue to spend money on them. The Nut Job, even by the standards of small-studio cartoons, is a bad, lazy movie. It’s about a squirrel (voiced by Will Arnett) who wants to steal a lot of nuts for the winter. He’s banished by the elders in his park to The City, making this another fish-out-of-water cartoon. Yes, most animated animal movies use that concept, but this one actually has a song on the soundtrack called “Fish Out of Water.” The jokes fail, the animation is nothing special, and your kids would be better off mainlining Cookie Crisp.
