Joseph Gordon-Levitt has given some amazing performances in the last few years, notably in Brick and Mysterious Skin, but with The Lookout, hes starting to fall into type. In this noir thriller, he plays Chris Pratt, a brain-damaged man who is recruited by a gang of hoodlums to be the fall guy in a bank heist. Lookout has the basic elements down, but not much more. Its redeemed by the oozy evil of Matthew Goode as bank robber Gary Spargo. Also turning in a cutting performance is Isla Fisher as the not-so-bright girlfriend to the no-longer-so-bright Pratt. Lookout is a predictable, by-the-numbers heist film with reasonably decent cinematography and some razor-sharp acting. Not bad, but not one youll remember.
