The Last Circus
Twisted, gory and decidedly European, The Last Circus earned Álex de la Iglesia a Best Director nomination at last year’s Venice Film Festival. That’s quite an achievement for a movie with this much gunplay and blood—and for a love triangle involving two disfigured clowns. Managing to bookend his incredibly bizarre tale with the Spanish Civil War and the 1973 bombing death of the country’s prime minister, Luis Carrero Blanco, de la Iglesia pulls out all the stops. This film is not normal in any way, from one clown fighting the fascists in the 1930s in full costume and makeup, to its totally unglued ending. But, man, is it a whole lot of sadistic fun. The Last Circus isn’t so much a great film as it is a bad-ass injection of weird—weird even for a circus.
