The Double Hour

Although it takes a while for the details to come into focus—and even then, they might wilt under close inspection—the pacing and misdirection in Giuseppe Capotondi’s The Double Hour will keep you interested a lot longer than most mysteries. The Italian film noir stars Kseniya Rappoport as a lonely cleaning woman who meets a security guard (Filippo Timi) during a speed-dating event. The fall for each other, and on what should be a lovely weekend away, they become victims of a burglary gone horribly wrong. Where Capotondi takes the film from the protracted setup is where things really start to get intense—and more than a bit perplexing. Rappoport is a terrific femme fatale; the question is: Does she know she’s supposed to be?
