The Debt
Although The Debt will get significant play out of the fact that it stars Helen Mirren, it’s really the third act of Jessica Chastain’s remarkable summer-long coming-out party. She has shot out of obscurity, playing opposite Brad Pitt in The Tree of Life, as the boozy Southern belle in The Help, and now as a younger version of Dame Mirren’s character, a Mossad agent hunting a Nazi war criminal in the divided Berlin of the 1960s. The Debt is a remake of an Israeli film from a few years back, retouched by writer-producer Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) and director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love). The ending is only so-so, but most of the storytelling is solid, and the cast is superb, with Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkinson, Ciarán Hinds and Jesper Christensen as the evil Nazi. However, it really boils down to the ladies, and principally Jessica Chastain.
