Action, Adventure
A mass pigeon suicide disrupts Trafalgar Square, a wayward space shuttle lands in downtown Los Angeles, a fierce lightning storm obliterates the Roman Coliseum and microwave radiation melts the Golden Gate Bridge, all because the Earth’s core mysteriously has stopped spinning! So the obvious solution is to build a $50 million indestructible metallic Tootsie Roll (quaintly named Virgil) with the extra cash and resources the United States has lying around, have a motley crew of scientists fly it to the center of the Earth and use ultrasonic turbo blasters to jump start the planet. No problem. This cinematic tabloid with a ridiculously implausible plot, highly idealized scenarios and mediocre special effects by director Jon Amiel is an adequate thrill ride for a Saturday night.
