If you lost an object on the streets of Tucson in the last quarter century, there's a chance you may see it again in The Beveled Ark, a creation of found objects that have been assembled into motion as a vessel. On display and in movement at Mat Bevel's Museum of Kinetic Art, this is a creation to behold.
Mat Bevel (otherwise known as Ned Schaper) has created humorous characters over the years—some who are "staff members" of the Museum of Kinetic Art, including Sunny Litwell, clad in a yellow rain slicker, yellow pants and wearing a light bulb; Justice of the Pieces; Major Crisis, wearing a military flight suit; and General Boxhead with—you guessed it—a box on his head.
The Beveled Ark is curated by General Lee Speaking and opens on Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12, from 4 to 8 p.m., at ART Gallery at Stone Dragon Studio, 1122 N. Stone Ave. Viewing hours are by appointment after that through Friday, July 25, when there is a closing reception from 4 to 8 p.m.
Bevel's Ark then moves to the Tucson Museum of Art starting on Aug. 8, where Schaper will "disentangle" the ark so visitors can see the kinetic sculptures in the museum. More info at matbevel.com or 405-5800.
