Writer/director Eran Kolirin effectively uses loneliness to create a common bond between two warring cultures. Instead of arriving at the Arab cultural center where they’re scheduled to perform, an Egyptian police band winds up stranded in an Israeli desert town where time has seemingly stopped. This film was not eligible for foreign-language Oscar consideration since English dominates the otherwise Hebrew and Arabic soundtrack. However, The Band’s Visit received awards at numerous film festivals, and it’s easy to see why.
