Here’s another collection of award-winning short films from this year’s Sundance Film Festival. There’s a great range of genres at play here; from the ultra-dramatic to laugh-out-loud funny to experimental exercises, you’re sure to find something you love from this next generation of filmmakers. Highlights among these eight short films include Skinningrove, a photographer’s touching look back at a remote English fishing village; Whiplash, about a young jazz drummer trying not to raise the ire of the drill sergeantlike bandleader played with vicious intensity by The Closer’s J.K. Simmons; Until the Quiet Comes, a hypnotic document of life in the inner city with music by hip-hop artist Flying Lotus; and The Event, a harrowing tale about the end of the world as seen through the eyes of two animated animals in love.
