Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny

The first six minutes of this movie, a sort of mini-rock opera, are stellar. The rest of the movie is not nearly as good. Jack Black and Kyle Gass bring the origin story of the world’s greatest band to the big screen with mixed results. Fans expecting perfection might walk away a little miffed, while newcomers will probably enjoy themselves as long as they don’t hate Black. When JB (Black) goes to Hollywood, he meets up with KG (Gass), and they form a duo. After perusing some rock magazines, they discover that all rock gods like Van Halen and Townshend played with the same pick, forged from Satan’s tooth. They hit the road in search of the pick, and decent cameos ensue (Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins, John C. Reilly as Sasquatch and Dave Grohl as Satan). The final battle with Satan is a good one; the music is decent, and the laughs are semi-steady. It’s a good flick, but I expected more from the D. It bombed terribly at the box office, so it’s a good thing Black had some projects in the can before its release.
