Michael Shannon stars as Curtis, a man plagued by paranoiac visions of oncoming storms, and vicious nightmares about his family being attacked. Basically, he’s a very troubled guy, and Shannon turns in a barn-burning, apocalyptic performance that only he could give. Jessica Chastain is equally good as his wife, a good-natured person who is terrified by the path her husband is on. Writer-director Jeff Nichols has put together an unsettling movie about these often-difficult times in which we live. Take Shelter is not a feel-good movie by any means, unless you favor feeling like shit. It’s one of the year’s best films, with Shannon and Chastain deserving award consideration.
