The future of America rests in the hands of a drunken, apathetic, self-absorbed dolt in this Capra-esque ode to democracy from director/co-writer Joshua Michael Stern. Kevin Costner stars as Bud, a small-town idiot with a total disregard for hygiene whose single vote will determine the next president of the United States, thanks in part to his overly mature 12-year-old daughter (played admirably by Madeline Carroll). Soon, the press and the presidential candidates vie for Buds attention and affection, something that Bud milks like a lottery winner. Reminiscent of 1939s The Great Man Votes and the Florida mishap during the 2000 election, this timely comedy finds the right balance between entertainment and political commentary.
