Also at Skrappy's the following night is the emo-ska punk sounds of Rx Bandits. If you've bought into the newly trendy "ska is dead" hyperbole, these guys will surely prove you wrong, as their live shows are reportedly exponentially better than their recorded output, which is pretty damn good in itself. Touring in support of their brand-spankin' new third full length release, In Name And Blood (Sub Pop), Seattle's The Murder City Devils unleash their fury on a 21-and-over crowd this week. Proving that there is indeed new ground to be broken in the realm of punk rock, the six-piece Devils combine the raw power of The Stooges with a drony organ sound and the yelping howl of singer Spencer Moody, whose voice sorta resembles a cross between Black Flag-era Henry Rollins and former Jesus Lizard/Scratch Acid screamer David Yow. The result is irresistibly sleazy fun, and the band's showcase at this year's South By Southwest garnered them a reputation as a hella rockin' live act.
The Murder City Devils pile into the basement of the Double Zero, 121 E. Congress St., at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11. Also on the bill are Alternative Tentacles recording artists Dead And Gone; The Yo-Yo's, who uphold the presumed-lost tradition of anthemic British punk; and Seattle's The Catheters. END OF THE ECLIPSE: Black Sun Legion shows are always a rarity--it's been five months since the last one--but bandleader Psycho Master (a.k.a. Jesus Acedo) has a pretty good excuse this time around: He's been holed up rehearsing and recording with his new backing band, local psych-pop masters Sun Zoom Spark, plus Spectro's Brian Maloney on sax. The result, Hymn of the Master, should be out soon on the Camera Obscura imprint, and BSL will be previewing material from the new album this week when it appears at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 7, at Solar Culture, 31 E. Toole Ave. The show kicks off with the lovely cello/guitar/vocals duo Agave. Then Sun Zoom Spark plays the middle slot, showcasing its own material and previewing songs from its upcoming release, Pop Rouge, before the new incarnation of Black Sun Legion takes over.
