Re: “Respond to Hate

It is not the responsibility of the LGBT community to "pick up the pace in terms of community awareness....etc." It is the reponsiblity of ALL of us to stand together when any group among us is targeted and oppressed. (And I say this as someone who is not gay.) Civil rights movements need ALL of us and those who are in the dominant and dominating group have the most responsibility.

Re: “Guest Commentary

Being from Bisbee, I am proud of the unanimous vote that our council took to support the rights of same sex couples. As one of our dear gay residents said at the meeting: "We are only asking for a sliver of what the rest of you take for granted." It is not nearly enough, but it is a start. The vote had very wide support in Bisbee, except for those who stood up and selectively quoted the Bible as 'proof' of their right to hold hateful, prejudiced views. Their views were in the minority. Fortunately, many of the Christians in Bisbee really are Christians and many stood up and supported the separation of church and state, as well as the rights of the LBGT community. As for me and my husband--we will be attending the civil union ceremonies of our friends and will continue to land on the side of "liberty and justice" for all. Tom Horne is a narrow minded bigot. His stance on this issue and on Mexican Studies in TUSD will be his legacy and he will be remembered much the same as we remember the George Wallaces and other facists that pepper our history in the land of the sorta free.

Re: “This Is the Cocktail Menu You Should Be Ordering From This Afternoon

I'm with you James. Sounds intriguing to me--some really refreshing ingredients. And I like the idea of wine cocktails, being a lightweight.

Re: “I Am So Conflicted About the Local-Food Movement

In Bisbee one of the elementary schools has a garden so that kids learn early how food is grown. They learn a lot of things from tending a garden, for that matter. Just to mention a few things: Cooperative gardens, learning how simple it is to grow at least some of your own food, local farmers dedicated to growing healthy food--its all necessary, not just one thing. We can't expect farmers to make nothing for their labor. If huge agribusiness can get subsidies, so should small farmers.

Re: “Protest Persists

America, where enforcing Park regulations is more important than enforcing Banking regulations.
Other cities have supported their Occupy movement and we should be one of them. If the city refuses to waive the citations, then I hope that those cited will find a plan to slow down and stop up the city court system as much as possible. There is a fund in place to help those cited--if we can't be in the park, we ought to be making donations to those who are on the front lines.

Re: “Family Portraits

Real, lasting love is hard enough to come by in this world. Nobody's business what form it takes. What's important is that all of these couple's cherish each other and their children. As one who has worked with kids in foster care after abuse and neglect, I am so moved by people who give these kids a home and healthy future. I know they would all say that they are the ones who have received the most, but its definitely a two-way street. Kudos to all of you. This discrimination is no different from the same old crap that drove and drives hatred of people of color--that is supposedly sanctioned by the Bible too. I am not a Christian so its not a closer to me to hear about what the Bible says--BUT Jesus doesn't mention homeosexuality once in the New Testament and in the old testament its mentioned right next to encouragement to 'smite' your neighbor under certain circumstances and 'stone' certain women to death. Hello--2011, anyone???!!!

Re: “Danehy

Roy Oberson is a classic. But I am with Creeping Critter: Procol Harum, Ten Years After, the Jimmy's, Traffic, Joni Mitchell, Eagles, Paul Simon, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin--Dylan--AND I love all these suggestions. Here I go to Pandora to set up some new stations. I still love all of this music--and, believe it or not, Maria Callas!
