An unfortunately unsatisfying coda to the career of Bernie Mac, Soul Men is a funked-up but low-laugh version of Grumpy Old Men. Mac and Samuel L. Jackson play members of a former Stax Records-esque groove group called The Real Deal. Three decades after the groups breakup, they get the chance for a big reunion concert, if they can only drive across America while working out their relationship problems. Yes, its that movie: They hate each other; they get in trouble; they laugh; they learn; they have Viagra-induced erections lasting longer than four hours. I wish Soul Men were funnier, but Mac and Jackson are pretty great in the lead roles, and they squeeze whatever comedy they can out of this lemon.
