The world is watching us and the world is laughing at us.

We were supposed to be the bastion of freedom and liberty for all the world to envy, but the fatal flaw in any democracy is that the people -- all the people -- must remain engaged to make sure that the government remains focused on the strength of the nation, its institutions and the welfare of all the people it represents.

Unfortunately, modern American culture has continually pulled and pushed Americans away from their civic responsibilities -- whether it is serving on a jury or serving in the armed forces -- popular culture encourages people to let someone else do the heavy lifting and to sit back and enjoy the fruits of others labor.

Well, that attitude -- which has no partisan boundaries -- has played into the hands of our enemies, both foreign and domestic. This nation was attacked by a sworn enemy during the 2016 election and both parties still quibble over which candidate they were helping more.

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WAS ATTACKED! All indications are that it will happen again, but we have done nothing to stop it. Only the pointless political bickering continues, like Nero fiddling as Rome burns.

The vacuum left by Americas absence from the world stage has let dictators, despots and despicable governments fill the void and has left America more vulnerable than ever.

Meanwhile, we are meant to focus on political games, reality TV, streaming video, entertainment and sporting events -- bread and circuses for the masses -- as the barbarians amass from without and within.

The world is watching us, the world is laughing at us and some are waiting for us to fall.

Following the photo opportunity with the military working dog Conan, an unidentified White House staffer was overheard asking about the special training Conan received and if it could be used at the White House to keep the president from humping the U.S. flag and keeping Rudy Giuliani from defecating on the Oval Office carpet.

Like every other institution in this country, the current occupant of the White House is undermining and destroying the U.S. military despite his staged gestures of support.

When he first came to power, he talked about his generals in his cabinet where are they now?

He has directed the use of highly skilled and trained military personnel to the border to perform menial tasks that demoralize troops and keep them away from their families not to mention diverting them from maintaining their primary skills and training levels.

He has diverted military funding for the construction of a wall that is a psychological prop for those peddling racially-motivated, hate-filled narratives designed to divert attention from Americas real enemies and actual threats.

He totally discounts the chain of command and the maintenance of good order and discipline by undercutting military leadership and the Uniformed Code of Military Justice for purely political reasons.

He orders Special Forces to abandon allies in the face of the enemy and allows those allies to be slaughtered or forced to look to other nations nations not friendly to the United States for support.

He has endangered South Korea, Japan, Australia and the entire region by indulging oppressive governments and ignoring the militarization of the Pacific by China.

He puts the lives of millions in Ukraine at risk, setting up a possible conflict that could involve NATO and U.S. armed forces, for the sake of political dirt, and on and on.

During the presidential debate Oct. 28, 1980, then Republican candidate Ronald Reagan stated, Ask yourself, 'Are you better off now than you were four years ago?

I suggest you ask yourself if this country is safer than it was three years ago? Where does this country stand with its allies allies that this president has insulted and tried to shake down and extort at every opportunity -- and would those same allies stand with us in light of this administrations active and tacit support of fascist and oppressive governments around the world.

Build roads that don't run with water when it rains -- and not that cheap chip seal crap.

Increase police response time with more officers and community service officers.

Stop getting sued for stupid stuff that you should have known about.

Stop shaking down any new business ventures for money up front.

Stop making deals with questionable real estate developers.

Bring back incentives for movies and television shows to film here.

Don't piss off Raytheon.

Don't piss off the U.S. Air Force.

Leverage the University of Arizona to create business opportunities and community value.

Last, but not least, work within the law, or work to change the laws, to make Tucson a safe place for everyone to include those who come here at the peril of their lives in their home countries.

Mr. Gandy,

While I stand by my comments, I understand your statement and I fully support your different perspective, especially based on your personal experience growing up in the time and place you describe.

It is too bad our so-called political leaders cannot open their eyes or minds to realize that not everyone has the same point of view and that respectfully acknowledging others freedoms and rights is the basis of our country.

Trying to make everyone think and feel the same way and fall into line with a single leader is the antithesis of America.
