Search for the Best Guinness 

Yes, it is that time again. No, we're not talking about an oil embargo, so don't worry. We're talking about finding who pours the best Guinness in Tucson.

As we continued our St. Patrick's research, we had some great pours and others that were OK. We can't say we had a bad one, because we don't believe there is such a thing. The art of pouring a great Guinness is like writing the story Moby Dick, painting the masterpiece "Guernica" or cooking a French gourmet meal. Just like a poet, artist or chef, you must have the proper tools to start with.

In order to have a great Guinness, you must also have the proper equipment, such as the right gas and pressure. Some establishments keep their Guinness kegs in a separate cooler so they are kept at a warmer temperature.

We noticed that a lot of the establishments that had a good pour had a lot in common. Many of that had a good pour the last two years did well this year, but some had an edge over others--such as the places that just opened. They had fresh lines while others had old lines that have not been cleaned out in a long time.

Since we have been out tasting for three years, many bartenders knew who we were--or they realized it after we started to measure the temperature of the beer and the head size as well as putting dimples in the head.

We always go back to the Top 5 establishments to see if their first pour is as good as the second one. We take their average, and then we have a winner.

This year was a very unusual one. The Presidio's cooler was down, and they had no beers on tap. When we went to the City Grill (last year's winner), they had problems with their pressure gauge, which created a large head.

The results: fourth runner up Presidio Grill, 3352 E. Speedway Blvd.; third runner-up Metro Grill at Park Place Mall; second runner-up Stein and Dine, 7002 E. Golf Links Road; first runner-up City Grill, 6464 Tanque Verde Road.

This year's winner: Montgomery's Irish Pub, 9155 E. Tanque Verde Road, where Indy has found the right touch to serve this year's best Guinness in Tucson.
