Rio gets halfway to each of its destinations. It’s moderately entertaining; it doesn’t look bad; it has some OK jokes and a few big names; and it even throws in half a dozen songs. But it never fully exploits anything, and as a result, it never rises above average for more than a few minutes. The pairing of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway as mismatched mating Macaws works; Jemaine Clement as the villain (a conniving cockatoo) does not. None of the other names, from Wanda Sykes to Jamie Foxx to George Lopez, bring much at all. The music is executive-produced by Brazilian legend Sergio Mendes, and most of it is great; there’s just not enough of it. While kids will enjoy this enough, they probably won’t give the Blu-ray a lot of action when you’re contractually bound by parenthood to pick it up a few months from now.
