Golightly is ably assisted in this endeavor by Texas native Lawyer Dave (the sole member of the Brokeoffs). Both sing and play guitars, while Dave handles the percussion on a unique foot-drum kit of his own design. In keeping with their low-fi preferences, the pair recorded these 14 numbers in a vintage analog studio in Gijon, Spain.
Together, Holly and Dave howl and moan, creating charming red-dirt duets that wouldn't be out of place in a mix with blues or folk pioneers. Their music is just the sort of thing American musicologists such as Alan Lomax or Harry Smith might've stumbled across--which might explain, at least in part, why Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs are soon relocating to Georgia.
Among the CD's highlights are the vengeful "My 45," the dark 'n' spooky stroll "Indeed You Do," the barnyard shuffle "Cluck Old Hen," the irreverent "Gettin' High for Jesus" and the infectious opener, "Bottom Below," which kind of sounds like a bucket of guitar strings and ball bearings falling off a ladder.
