The folks at local label Funzalo and Wavelab Studio decided to put together a compilation of songs recorded at Wavelab as a benefit for Habitat for Humanity's Musician's Village Project in New Orleans. The likes of Robyn Hitchcock, John Doe and Steve Wynn have all recorded there, and the best thing about this compilation is that it brings together not only the local musicians who have used the studio, but the international ones as well, showing how this crazy desert-Western thing we've got going on here shows up in other artists' songs.

Hence, the segue between Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3's "Riverside," and Calexico's "Griptape Heart" is flawless, and the jump from Luca's "Shadow Painting" to the Nick Luca and Mike Prado remix of DeVotchKa's "Twenty-Six Temptations," off of their 2004 release, How It Ends, makes perfect sense. Richmond Fontaine's "The Gits" is an ode to the old grunge scene in Seattle (anyone who's hung out in the back room at The Rendezvous will get oh-so-nostalgic), and the slide guitar on Amelia White's "Skeleton Key" brings things back down south. Perhaps the best example of how Graciously brings together both local and international is Howe Gelb and Scout Niblett's medley, "I Want Candy / I Know What Boys Want / Who Do You Love / Not Fade Away."

New Orleans benefit aside, Graciously's real cause is showing even more people outside of Tucson that there's more here than urban sprawl and cactus.
