In the future, our organs will be replaced by synthetics. They’ll work better, last longer and be a snap to replace; they’ll even come complete with payment plans. Those are the conditions in Repo Men, and because these artificial organs carry such a big sticker price, the company that produces them will go to great lengths to get them back if you can’t pay. It’s bloody, unseemly work—and what ultimately blocks Repo Men from being more of a success is the astonishing amount of gore. A few scenes are probably required to set the stage, but the intensity of the bloodletting grows as the movie progresses. As a repo man who finds himself on the run when he can’t pay for a new ticker, Jude Law’s solid action-hero turn is squandered here.
