Red Doors

While it evinces the cinematography, plot and scripting of a TV movie, Red Doors is nonetheless a compelling and entertaining portrayal of a suburban family. Father Ed is a sort of grown-up Harold from Harold and Maude. He divides his time between viewing video tapes of his kids and trying to kill himself. His youngest daughter is in a nonsexual S&M relationship with a neighbor boy; his oldest is in a loveless engagement while she pines over her hippy musician ex, and his middle child is trying to get through medical school while learning to accept her special adult love of other women. It’s sitcom material, but it’s handled well, and Tzi Ma does a great job as the sadly comic father.

Red Doors is not showing in any theaters in the area.
