Rango

A peculiar movie in more ways than one, Rango is the kind of bizarro Western you’d expect to find on late at night on a cable channel you didn’t know you had. It’s not bad or even campy; it’s just really strange, certainly for a big-budget animated flick starring Johnny Depp. While it is age-appropriate, and there are enough sight gags for kids to laugh at, it is absolutely not made for the wee ones. But who the hell cares? It puts its brand on two sacred cows—mass-marketed animated flicks and Westerns—while still satisfying the demands of both. It’s good to see—or at least hear—Johnny Depp devoting himself to a performance again.

Rango is not showing in any theaters in the area.
