Punch Drunk Love

Adam Sandler stars in this art film (sic) about a man who is being harassed by a phone-sex operator while he tries to woo a beautiful woman. This may sound like the set-up for a standard romantic comedy, but instead director P.T. Anderson (Magnolia, Boogie Nights) creates a work with the tension of a Cassavetes film and the aesthetic styling of one of those Technicolor comedies from the ’50s. Punch Drunk Love is somewhat grueling to sit through, but film fans won’t want to miss it. It’s that rare example of true, focused art coming to cinema. While it’s not for those with the intellectual shortcomings of, say, the President of the United States, a more refined crowd might just think this is one of the best-crafted films of the year.
