The teen pop sensation One Direction has a documentary, and it’s bizarrely enough directed by Morgan Spurlock from Super Size Me. As an account of what it’s like to be a famous boy band, One Direction: This Is Us checks all the appropriate boxes. “Look at those crazy fans,” says one scene. “Look at us rehearsing,” points out another. “We’re really normal lads,” expresses some other scene. “And, jeez, look at those crazy fans,” exclaims yet another. It’s perfectly fine for the target audience that just wants to see the band. But suppose they have staying power—what sort of documentary is this? It’s just a piece of marketing collateral. Spurlock has said, sacrilegiously, that this was his opportunity to make A Hard Day’s Night, and he felt like he succeeded. So now we know never to pay attention to Morgan Spurlock ever again.
