Old Joy

This is a very slow-paced story about two friends on a camping trip. Pretty much nothing happens for most of the film as aging hipsters (Will Oldham and Daniel London) talk about the meaningless and pretentious things that aging hipsters talk about. As they search for a hidden hot spring, tensions surface between them, and Oldham does a good job of portraying the uptight friend who doesn’t want to admit that there’s a problem. Still, there’s not enough to sustain the film, and London is just sort of annoying as the mildly mystical friend. He’s not a bad actor, but the part as written is too steeped in stoner-isms for it to be really effective. There are some nice shots of the piney forests, but in the end, Old Joy could have used a more active approach to its story.
