Obvious Child
There’s good work from SNL alum Jenny Slate in Obvious Child, a comedy about a struggling comedienne who wakes up with a guy she just met, then realizes a few weeks later why she feels so funny inside. An unplanned pregnancy (and its trajectory) is nominally at the center of the film, but in reality it’s either a mere plot device or a heavily pronounced subplot in a movie that is instead about a meet-cute between two people who, on the surface, don’t seem that right for each other. Of the recent unplanned prego comedies, this isn’t as funny as Knocked Up or as insightful and original as Juno. And because it’s pretty short (88 minutes), there’s time for Obvious Child to be more than an outline for the movie it wants so desperately to become. Still, it should augur well for Jenny Slate’s career.
