Downtown K+C's Next Summer Stop

This week, Downtown Kitchen + Cocktails takes its Downtowns Around the Globe tour to Marrakesh, Morocco. Working with the exotic spices of the region, chef/owner Janos Wilder has created an authentic three-course menu showcasing the dishes of the ancient city.

"This is the second stop on this year's culinary tour" Wilder said. (The first was Seoul, South Korea.) "We love these flavors. The dishes we're preparing are unique, delicious and beautiful." Pizza for a Good Cause

Ben's Bells and Falora have partnered to bring us the Bené Bell pizza. Ari Shapiro of Falora and Jeanette Mare of Ben's Bells have known each other for more than a decade, so perhaps this was destined to happened. They say that the response to the pie has thus far been super, and Falora plans to keep it as a permanent menu item.

If you have eaten at Falora, you probably have noticed that all the pies have Italian names. So it's no coincidence that bene translates to good. And with ingredients like San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, artichoke hearts, sugar snap peas and green bell peppers, its sounds bené to me. The proceeds from every sale go directly to supporting Ben's Bells in its mission to educate people about the power of kindness. It's a great way to support a great cause while enjoying an awesome pie.

New Sweet Shop Opening

Midtown will gain a sweet neighbor when a new dessert bakery opens at Broadway Village later this month. Sugar Sweet Bakery will be the newest business to open at the historic Joesler-designed complex. It's already home to eateries such as Sushi Garden and the aforementioned Falora.

Don Scheer and his wife, Tina Owyoung, were fellow art directors at a local publishing company before they decided to make drastic career changes and follow their passion for baking. "Our plan is to offer popular American cookie jar favorites right next to flavors inspired by regional tastes and culinary trends," Owyoung says. "We know the traditional varieties will sell well, but we feel Tucson is craving more adventurous flavor profiles, too." The offerings will include cookies, brownies and cake by the slice. Plans call for the bakery to be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Visit or the bakery's Facebook page for updates on the opening.
