Noshing Around

Dante's Fire Opening Soon?

A liquor license has recently been filled for Dante's Fire restaurant. The address, 2526 E. Grant Road, is the previous home of Rio Café. The "A" framed, Swiss looking building looks to be home to a new concept, but no details yet. They do have a Facebook page up at, if you'd like to "like" them in advance.

Umi Star Menu Additions; Neon Lights Back On

A Tucson and Fourth Avenue staple has some bright lights on again. At 434 N. Fourth Ave., Caruso's Italian Restaurant has part of its neon signage repaired and lit up. The sign was installed in the 1950s and due to a change in the city code it can now be repaired. It is still a work in progress, due to other city ordinances; all of the work has to be done on site.

Umi Star, at 2502 N. Campbell Ave. is changing things up and serving big bowls of deliciousness in addition to its original small plate menu. The ramen bowl caught my eye: fresh ramen, shitake mushrooms, cilantro, soft-boiled egg, and Kurobuta pork sausage in a house-made vegetable miso broth. Also the newly added rice bowl and a cold noodle bowl sound tasty as well. For reservations, call 777-4465.

Barrio Brewing Making More Beer

Dennis Arnold has updated his 1995 equipment to triple production at Barrio Brewing, 800 E. 16th St. The old equipment produced something close to 4,000 barrels per year with the new system allowing a start of 12,000 barrels and maxing out at much more. Along with the equipment upgrade the brewing space is getting an overhaul including an 18-foot wide observation window. Visit their website at
