Ultimate Server Challenge

Servers from across the city will go head-to-head when RA Sushi and La Encantada hold the Ultimate Server Challenge from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 22. Events include a tray race, a corkscrew challenge, a check-relay obstacle course and a table-setup competition. Food and drink samples will be provided by RA Sushi, Alliance Beverage and Golden Eagle Distributors. Admission is a donation of $5 or five cans of food to the Tucson Community Food Bank. The event takes place in Valet Circle on the east end of La Encantada (2905 E. Skyline Drive); 615-3970.

Vegetarian Finds

Tania's has been serving traditional Mexican food for 23 years at 614 N. Grande Ave., but it was the bonanza of vegetarian options that caught our eye on a recent visit. The soy-ceviche tostada was far better than anticipated, and the sopa de fideo's thin noodles and spicy broth were heavenly. Meals made with soy chorizo, soy machaca, calabacitas and other meatless items are also available. Call 622-0685, or visit tanias33.com for more information.

Tucson's Birthday Cake Contest

City Councilman Paul Cunningham celebrates Tucson's birthday with a cake contest on Friday, Aug. 20, at the Ward 2 Council Office (7575 E. Speedway Blvd.). Cakes will be judged for taste, creativity, decorations and how well they represent Tucson. Viewing starts at 9 a.m., followed by judging by Mayor Bob Walkup and former professional basketball player Joseph Blair at noon. Cake will be served after the winners are announced at 1 p.m. Admission is free; 791-4687.

Crafty Cocktails

The cocktail program at Hotel Congress continues to evolve. Bar manager Aaron DeFeo recently introduced his housemade East End Bitters, and the hotel now has a program in which specialty beers are aged like fine wine. DeFeo's series of cocktail classes continues with "Classic Cocktails and the Art of the Stir" on Saturday, Aug. 28. Admission is $30, which includes a bar tool. Reservations are required; www.hotelcongress.com.

Cooking Demonstratio

Chef Joe Tiano of Cayton's at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, gives a cooking demonstration at Williams-Sonoma (2905 E. Skyline Drive, Suite 103) from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21. Admission is free; 615-3595.
