Noshing Around

Ice Cream Social Fundraiser

On Thursday, Sept. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m., all 1,350-plus Cold Stone Creamery locations will dish out a free 3-ounce serving of a rich mix of chocolate ice cream with yellow cake, chocolate chips and rainbow sprinkles. This concoction called Cole's Creation is inspired by a 10-year-old boy whose Make-a-Wish Foundation request was to go to Ground Zero to meet the firefighters. Customers attending the event are encouraged to make a donation to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Go to and enter your zip code to find the location nearest you.

Gift Certificate Sale

The Tucson Originals restaurants create a quarterly buying frenzy when they offer gift certificates online that are discounted by 30 to 40 percent. For instance, pay $15 for a Zivaz gift certificate, and you can use it for $25 worth of food. Or pay $30 for a Bistro Zin gift certificate, and order $50 worth of food. On the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 26, visit and click on gift certificates. After you make your purchases, the certificates will be delivered to your e-mail for easy printout. Quantities are limited, and they sell out fast.

St. Philip's Plaza Chili Festival

Everyone thinks they make the best chili. Now is the time to prove it. Enter the chili-making contest or salsa challenge on Saturday, Sept. 30. Individuals and teams will compete for $550 in cash prizes and bragging rights. Lupita Murillo of KVOA Channel 4 and Jennifer English of the Food and Wine Radio Network will judge the delicious results around 1 p.m. Live music, arts and crafts vendors and food booths will be on hand at River Road and Campbell Avenue from noon to 7 p.m. General admission is $5.
