Networking for Chefs and Cooks

Looking for employment? Want to further your career, gain certification or schmooze with colleagues? Join CASA (Chef's Association of Southern Arizona)--a chapter of the American Culinary Federation. The next meeting is at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, at JNippon in the Foothills Mall (7401 N. La Cholla Blvd.). Call 908-0100 for additional information.

What's Old Is New Again

Patrick Fahey, former executive chef at the Desert Museum, galloped up the road to Old Tucson. Why go from a renowned attraction to one that can't pay its property taxes? Fahey says Old Tucson anticipates overflow from the new Star Pass Marriott Resort, with more opportunities to serve larger groups in the forthcoming El Vaquero restaurant. His specialty is Sonoran cowboy cuisine, and his ambition is to create something like a Western-style Fleming's Steak House with a protein-heavy, upscale presentation using indigenous ingredients while serving seasonal specials. For corporate catering solutions, call 883-0100 ext. 264.

Comfort Food with Janos

Tucson's winters are far from freezing, but that's not to say we couldn't all use some warm comfort food. Enter Janos, who demonstrates how to whip up braised short ribs, creamy horseradish potatoes, glazed carrots, tangerine mojo and bread pudding for $50 per person, which includes a winter cocktail tasting. It all happens on from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at 3770 E. Sunrise Drive; 615-6100. On Saturday, March 26, partake in the easy entertaining with hors d'oeuvres class, and cooking with early spring bounty on Saturday, April 16.

Sex on the Beach

RA Sushi offers them for only $2 during '80s night from 8 p.m. to midnight every Thursday. Rock out to Bon Jovi and Duran Duran while watching movie classics like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and The Breakfast Club on flat-screen televisions. I'll show you my Rubik's Cube if you'll show me yours, at 2905 E. Skyline Drive; 615-3970.
