Noshing Around

The Sweetest Things

The new executive pastry chef at Loews Ventana Canyon, 7000 N. Resort Drive, has taken charge of the posh resort's dessert program with aplomb. Chef Krista Owens, who worked at the Ventana Room until it closed in 2009, has added all sorts of delicious homemade sorbets, gelatos and ices to the menus, as well as sweets ranging from rustic crumb cakes to some amazing banana splits. Owens started as a cake-decorator at a grocery store and worked her way across the country at mom-and-pop bakeries and high-end eateries. Check out an extended interview with her from our daily blog, The Range.

New Moon Tucson

Remember when the LGBT bar Coyote Moon Pub at 915 W. Prince Road closed down, and Pulse Tucson opened there? Well, after only a couple of weeks, the owners of Pulse Tucson turned the place back over to the owners of the Coyote Moon Pub, and the place is now New Moon Tucson. The bar is open every day but Monday, and is host to all sorts of drag shows and other events. Happy hour from 4 to 8 p.m. features $2 wells; $2 domestic bottles and pints; and $2 New Moon shots made with Malibu Rum, Island Punch Pucker and simple syrup. There's also a nice selection of bar eats; 293-7339.

New: Jalopy's Grillville and Brewery

A new restaurant and microbrewery is opening in the former Joe Mama's Grill spot at 4230 N. Oracle Road, Suite 100. Owner Hal Burns says Jalopy's Grillville and Brewery is expected to open in October, although suds won't be flowing until several months after that. Coincidentally, I took chemistry classes with Benjamin Vernon, the brew master for this place, and remember him singing the praises of ultra-hoppy beers as we toiled through our studies, so expect some aggressively hopped IPAs. For food, expect pizza, burgers and other standard American fare. Four or so beers will be in steady production, with other flavors emerging as time goes on; www.jalopysgrill.com.
