Noshing Around

Burger City

The recently opened Burger City, at 47 N. Sixth Ave., is up to something pretty flipping interesting: The eatery serves a dozen different burgers and is operated by the nonprofit ArtFare program, which means diners are eating and supporting local arts programs at the same time. The "Mem'fis City" comes with peanut butter and optional bananas ($6.75), and the "Sin City" comes covered in braised onions, wild mushrooms, spinach, pine nuts and Gruyere cheese ($9.50). Never fear, purists: They've got regular hamburgers, too. Did I mention the pickle bar? Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Wednesday; and 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., Thursday through Saturday; 903-0919.

Recession Busters

The J Bar at the Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa is offering specials tailored specifically for these grueling economic times. The recession rib-eye comes with garlic fries and other trimmings for $20; for $12.95, diners can dig into fish and chips, a trio of tamales or meatloaf. The specials are available through Saturday, Jan. 24. Wine lovers should note that Janos and J Bar are in the process of cleaning out their wine cellar and are selling select bottles for up to half off; 615-6100; janos.com.

Red Sky in Bankruptcy

Steve Schultz, owner and head chef of Red Sky New American Cuisine and Catering, tells Noshing that he has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to ensure the restaurant's viability. "We just needed to slow down the amount of money going out, because the economy slowed down," Schultz said, adding that no employees have been laid off at Red Sky or the nearby Luna Bella, which he also owns. The eatery celebrates nine years at 2900 N. Swan Road next month; 326-5454; redskycafeandcatering.com.
