Nine Questions

Victor Castañeda

Victor Castañeda is the lead singer and guitarist for A.M. Eyes, a local punk band. Catch them at the Rialto Theatre on May 12 as one of six bands in the "Tucson's Best" showcase. Their first EP, Quarter Life Crisis, was released in January 2012 and can be purchased on iTunes.

What was the first concert you attended?

It was KFMA Day. The drummer for the band I'm in now, William, and I were front row for New Found Glory. They were the first band to play. It was sort of life-changing, experiencing that loud rock 'n' roll in your face.

What are you listening to these days?

Foster the People, Anberlin. I'm still a huge fan of Finch, and I'm a huge '90s kid, so I still listen to Gin Blossoms, Third Eye Blind ... I really like Adele, too.

What was the first album you owned?

It was a gift for my father ... Classic Santana. It was a two-disc record that was a big influence in my father's life, so he wanted me to listen to it.

What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don't get?

Contemporary country music. I know a lot of people out there love country, and I respect their opinions and everything, but it's just really hard for me to listen to country. Modern country, anyway.

What musical act, current or defunct, would you most like to see perform live?

The Doors. That would be the most amazing experience ever. Jim Morrison is one of my big idols and influences.

Musically speaking, what is your favorite guilty pleasure?

Old-school '90s stuff like Savage Garden ... old-school boy bands. Honestly, my band and I will rock out to them sometimes. It's so cheesy and funny, but their songs are so catchy and infectious.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

"The End" by the Doors. Maybe something by City and Colour.

What band or artist changed your life, and how?

Blink-182 ... they're what made me want to pick up a guitar.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?

Revolver, by the Beatles.

We have no Summer of Love to ponder, no Vietnam War to protest, no miracle drug that's going to save us. But we do have an unpopular president and Sgt. Pepper to marvel over all over again. It's not the same, but it kinda is, and that's about the best splendid time that can be guaranteed for all in 2017.
