Nine Questions

Violinist Vicki Brown performs and records with numerous local musicians, such as Will Elliott, Amy Rude and Naim Amor. She just got back from touring with Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, and is on her way to SXSW with other local musicians for the first-ever Tucson showcase; here's wishing them lots of fun and industry love.

What was the first concert you ever saw?

Elton John, in Madison, Wis. I think I was 9; my mom took my sister and me.

What CDs are in your changer right now?

Sparklehorse, Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain; Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, Like, Love, Lust and the Open Halls of the Soul; a promo CD of the Dirty Three's first album from way back when; The Books, The Lemon of Pink; John Parish, How Animals Move; Curt Kirkwood, Snow.

How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks)?

Zero 8-tracks, five cassettes, half a milk crate of albums, and 150-200 CDs.

Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?

No, I don't; I pay for it all. I'll pay 99 cents for a song. I'll support my fellow artists; we all need food in our mouths.

What was the first album you owned?

What was given to me was Free to Be You and Me. The first record that I bought that was my own was the 45 for "Afternoon Delight." My mom wouldn't let me take it to show and tell, for reasons I didn't then understand.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

The second movement from Ravel's piano concerto in G.

Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

I'm really not ashamed of anything ... maybe that I do know the words to some Rick Astley songs.

What band or artist changed your life, and how?

One is Paul Horne--I took a class on improvisation with him, and that changed my outlook on being able to play with no notes in front of me. And Andrew Bird just blew me away. I found out you can actually do it; all it requires is a little coordination.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?

The Beatles, Abbey Road.
