Nine Questions

Matt Milner

In June, Matt Milner assumed hosting duties of Locals Only on KXCI FM 91.3, Monday nights from 8 to 10 p.m. Over the past few years, Matt has juggled law school while demonstrating his commitment to the DIY music community as an avid concertgoer, occasional performer and co-organizer of Bröötal Sun Fest, an all-ages music festival held annually in March.

What was the first concert you ever saw?

Garth Brooks. I was probably 10 years old. As a kid, I loved country-music videos, so Garth was a god to me.

What are you listening to these days?

Since taking over Locals Only, I feel like I'm listening almost exclusively to local music. The new Discos album has been in heavy rotation.

What was the first album you owned?

The first album I remember buying with my allowance was Hot by the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Obviously, I was a child of the '90s.

What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don't get?

Dubstep. I'm not even entirely sure what it is, but I'm pretty sure I don't like it.

What musical act, current or defunct, would you most like to see perform live?

The Clash. Even in low-res YouTube videos, they're unimpeachable.

Musically speaking, what is your favorite guilty pleasure?

I'm sure there are people who think it's not cool to like Meat Loaf. Those people are wrong.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

"Biomusicology" by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Hopefully, they'll also play a song that won't be written until around 2080.

What band or artist changed your life, and how?

Doctor Dinosaur. In a way, I'm cheating, because I used to be in the band, but it's because of that experience that I became more involved in the local music scene. I almost certainly wouldn't be hosting Locals Only if not for Doctor Dinosaur.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?

Funeral by Arcade Fire. Few albums manage to be both intimate and epic. Funeral is one of them. Listening to it makes life feel so damn important.
