What was the first concert you ever saw?
Thompson Twins and OMD at the Tucson Convention Center.
What CDs are in your changer right now?
I've already sold my CD player, so I'm re-listening to all the cassettes I made in my youth. Mixes of Depeche Mode, the Cure, the Smiths and Bananarama.
How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks)?
Hardly any. I spend my time and money on home renovation and travel. I am not counted among the music cognoscenti, and I feel lucky for the good music I have heard.
Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?
With a mid-'90s laptop, with hardly any RAM, running on Windows 98, that would be a no.
What was the first album you owned?
Beauty and the Beat, The Go-Go's.
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
Paul Simon's "Under African Skies," followed by Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir."
Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?
Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett and the Roches.
What band or artist changed your life, and how?
Hole's album Live Through This. Ignoring the celebrity life of Courtney Love, this album came at the exact right time of my feminist development and really rocked it open. Additionally, the foundation of my love of live music was built by many a River Roses show at the Student Union Cellar. Long live lunchtime dancing!
Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?
PJ Harvey's Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea. Lust, love, NYC and personal redemption--my favorite subjects. And it doesn't hurt that I got to meet her at Solar Culture. Thanks, Howe!
