Nine Questions

Born in Queens, N.Y., and raised in California, Rene Hechabarria moved to Tucson in 1982, where he became a club DJ, including a stint as one of the very first DJs at Club Congress, starting in 1986. He was once invited to become a member of the band Pop Will Eat Itself, and his godfather was Louis Armstrong, whom he met only once--when Armstrong held him as a baby.

What was the first concert you ever saw?

It was supposed to be Parliament/Funkadelic with The Gap Band opening, but my mother wouldn't let me go. I'm still mad! It ended up being the Scorpions and Iron Maiden, years later.

What CDs are in your changer right now?

Ghostface Killah, The Pretty Toney Album and Killarmy, Fear, Love & War.

How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks)?

I've had 300 LPs stolen (later spotted at P.D.Q.) and sold back hundreds of CDs to Zia, so now it's about 80 CDs--all rap.

Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?

No, it's a pain in the @ss.

What was the first album you owned?

A Beatles album on Apple Records--I can't remember which one. But the first album once I became aware that I was black was a '70s Soul Train compilation.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

M.O.P., "Dead and Gone."

Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

Parliament/Funkadelic. George Clinton is a god to me.
