New Year's Guide Pick

Gettin' Down, Disco Style

Try as they might (or might not) to fight it, some people run a constant fever. It's a fever many contracted in the '70s. It runs high; it runs low; it runs often. Tony Manero had it (and some wicked hair). Disco Stu has it in surplus (and the ugly fashion that often accompanies it). The Bee Gees cashed in on it (and subsequently dropped off the relevance chart forever after). Still not getting it?

Well, you can catch it down at the "YMCA" when you "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" in a "Celebration" of your inner "Dancing Queen" (or King). Or you can come down with it while riding the "Love Rollercoaster," thinking "I Will Survive" and shouting "That's the Way (I Like It)."

If you're still not getting it, relax, "Hot Stuff," because you can still catch the "Last Dance" (and probably all the other ones) at the New Year's Eve "Save the Last Dance" disco party at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, 7000 N. Resort Drive. The event will start at 9 p.m. and go until 2 a.m. Tickets are $65 a person and are available by calling 299-2020 ext. 5151.

Not wanting to "Rock the Boat," Loews' Public Relations Manager Sarah Beal told us all about the "Best Disco in Town."

"The idea came from last summer, when we had our 'Devastatingly Disco' at the Flying V every Thursday night with dancing to '70s and '80s music," Beal said. "We had dancing, a DJ, disco drinks and a retro menu of upscale sliders with ahi tuna and Kobe beef and barbecue buffalo."

So, what about "Save the Last Dance"? "This is an upscale version of our summer disco," Beal said. "More dancing, more drinking, dueling DJs, delectable appetizers and a disco drop at midnight that includes champagne and party favors."

Beal noted the $65-per-person package includes admission, three disco drinks (with the option of purchasing upgraded drinks and additional beverages from the full bar), one delectable appetizer, champagne and party favors. FYI, disco drinks include a variety of beverages, including distinctly named ones like the Donna Summer (coconut milk, pineapple juice and a splash of 7UP) and the Bee Gee (honey, citrus juices and egg-white froth).

DJs Jesse Guerra (aka 1PHATDJ) and Jose Rosario will be following the "Doctor's Orders" as they square off to make "Everybody Dance" and possibly get someone to utter "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life." Beal notes they're listed as Dueling DJs for a reason, "They'll be having a DJ-off, basically." Clearly, the winner will lay claim to the title of "Macho Man" while the other one can merely hope the crowd will "Forget-Me-Not."

Beal and staff have been pleased by the diehard patrons who "Never Can Say Goodbye" to what they feel is "The Best Disco in Town" at the resort. "We weren't sure how receptive Tucson would be to a disco," Beal said. "But so many people came and absolutely loved it last summer, that two of our frequent disco patrons created a petition, and more than 350 people signed it and asked us to continue disco into the fall. We hosted a Halloween disco party in October, and this New Year's Eve party is the disco finale of the year. This is our way of satisfying their desire to dance."

Apparently, the Loews crew is expecting a blowout for the grand finale disco party, because they've moved the event from its usual location at the Flying V Bar and Grill to the hotel's Grand Ballroom to allow more room for the "Good Times." "Because it's New Year's Eve, this is a more extravagant occasion," Beal said. "So, we're involving more décor and a bigger dance floor, and reservations are required, but it's the same dance hits from the '70s and '80s."

Also, guests who feel like a "Love Machine" can pay extra for a room if they've "Got to Love Somebody" or if their partner asks them to "Ring My Bell," or "Lay All Your Love On Me" or "Get Down On It" (sorry, had to squeeze those ones in somewhere). Or they can just get a room to crash from "Boogie Fever." Beal said packages start at $299 per couple.

Whether you're "In the Navy" or not, "Save the Last Dance" is the place to release your "Dancing Machine" this New Year's Eve. Where else can you do "The Hustle," "Get Lost in the Music" and take "A Lover's Holiday" in one place? So, fellows, squeeze into those polyester pants, and ladies, button up those pantsuits--it's time to "Get Dancin'."
