My Architect

This Academy Award-nominated documentary looks at the life of architect Louis Kahn through the eyes of his illegitimate son, Nathaniel. Kahn’s gorgeous buildings form the visual backdrop for what becomes a very personal story. Maybe too personal. While I was interested in Kahn’s life and work (because he’s famous), I couldn’t figure out why I should care what his son thought about it. I mean, this Nathaniel Kahn: Has he had a hit record? Has he shown his saggy, pierced man-breast on national TV? Is he on trial for killing his wife? Has he even ever been taken hostage? No! So he’s nobody! If you actually care about what an "ordinary person" feels, then you might enjoy this movie, because it delves pretty deeply into that kind of stuff. On the other hand, it also does a decent job of covering the career of a famous person, and for that, it stands out as an important cultural document.
