Mr. Woodcock

Billy Bob Thornton showed a nasty streak in Bad Santa and School for Scoundrels, but he had humor and originality on his side. This time, he’s still nasty, but humor and originality are nowhere to be found. The trite, unfunny script by Michael Carnes and Josh Gilbert depicts Thornton as crass and competitive as a physical-education teacher who tortures and torments innocent seventh-graders. Seann William Scott plays one of these chastised children, all grown up. When his mom (Susan Sarandon) somehow becomes smitten by the smarmy schmuck, old wounds are reopened, eventually leading to an implausible and nauseating conclusion. Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin stepped in to do some reshoots, but at that point, director Craig Gillespie and his trash of a film were beyond help.
