The bad guy gets his brief moment in the sun in Megamind, an animated film that ultimately lacks animation. It’s not the fault of the concept: Megamind (the voice of Will Ferrell) eventually overpowers his nemesis, the unassailable superhero Metro Man (Brad Pitt), and ends up feeling empty inside, because his reason to be evil no longer exists. But like a joke that never pays off after the setup, Megamind struggles to build on its novel idea. While Ferrell is very funny, he’s almost too funny for everything around him: a collection of stale animation; leaden vocal performances by Pitt, Tina Fey and Jonah Hill; and not enough attention to detail. Will kids like it? They’d better, or else this one’s sunk.
