Meet the Candidates

Congressman Jim Kolbe

The senior member of Arizona's congressional delegation, Republican Jim Kolbe is seeking his 11th term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

A native of Evanston, Ill., Kolbe is a Navy vet who served in Vietnam. He's been in politics for more than 46 years, getting his start as a page for Barry Goldwater in 1958. He served in the Arizona State Senate from 1976 to 1982.

He lost his first congressional race to Democrat Jim McNulty in 1982 but won it in a rematch in 1984.

State Rep. Randy Graf

Randy Graf, 45, moved to Green Valley in 1984 and worked as a golf pro for the next 10 years. Since getting out of the golf biz, he's sold cars and real estate, and has managed a limousine service in Tucson.

In 1994, he got his first taste of politics when he won a seat on the Continental school district governing board. After four years of service, he stepped down and decided to get involved in the Republican Party. Two years later, he won his first House seat. For the last two years, he has served as House majority whip.

He's proud to say he was "probably the only conservative voice in Southern Arizona."

Graf says he's guided a fundamental document.

"In my background of being a golf pro and being involved in Little League as an umpire, you have to get a rule book," Graf says. "The Constitution is sort of a rule book that I take very seriously."
