Re: “Danehy

It's about freakin' time that the City gets off of whatever it was they were sitting on and actually work FOR the people. What a concept. Thank you Mr. Mayor, Mr. Duarte and staff for giving this wonderful woman a break (not to mention the patrons of this wonderful restaurant).

Re: “Stopping At Red Lights Is For Liberals

If you break a law that you didn't like in the first place, become a State Senator, sponsor a bill and get the law changed to suit yourself. That way, if you continue to run red lights, you just sponsor another bill. See? Easy-peasy.

Re: “The Civil War

I found it interesting that although Dupnik did not name an individual or a group as being responsible for the nasty rhetoric that is now shouted on a daily basis, they were the first to stand up and cry foul, and wave the "freedom of speech" flag, while wanting to deny Dupnik that same right. He spoke the words I was thinking. Without grandstanding or jumping in front of the kleig lights, he's done a great job for Pima County - a real "border county." He's always had and will always have my vote.

Re: “Bookmans

On July 10, a group of writers, known collectively as Gecko Gals Ink, held a book signing at Bookmans on Grant Road. On behalf of that collection of sassy Tucson authors who are 'differently expertised', I'm extending a sincere thank you to Travis Tripp, the manager, as well as to all the employees in that location, for making our experience one we will long remember.

Despite predictions of rain, a continual throng of book sellers and buyers packed that venue , allowing us to have truly inspiring chats with readers of all genres. Readers are the reasons writers have put pen to papyrus and paper, and fingers to keyboards over the centuries.

It was heartening to watch and talk to Tucson readers – including the kids (thank you parents). Keep on reading and supporting Independent bookstores – and we'll keep on writing and reading and supporting Independent bookstores.

What a fantastic community are the readers and writers. On behalf of Gecko Gals Ink, I am Mary Ann Hutchison (Carol Costa, Jude Johnson, D. H. Palmer and Ashleen O'Gaea). Watch for us at the other Bookmans and Independent book stores in and around Tucson or join us at

Re: “Vote Yes On Prop 100

Ah, but the best idea our esteemed legislators have also come up with is the old "cut taxes to businesses to entice them to come to Arizona." I've lived in Arizona for 46 years and have watched this dance before. I've seen businesses come, enjoy the tax break, and when they discover that Arizona doesn't give a damn about education, can't afford the law enforcement and fire fighters to protect them, and is spending what little money it has on everything but where it should, they pick up their families and go.

That leaves people without the jobs that were touted as being one of the reasons for cutting business taxes in the first place ("bringing business to Arizona creates jobs" - same ploy as when we were busy building houses that now remain empty - "if you build them they will come"). They also go.

We're living on a fixed income, but I'm tired of the old "cut taxes, reduce spending" thinking. Can't anyone see that there is nothing left to cut? Vote yes on Prop 100 and stop being penny-wise and pound foolish.

Re: “Guest Opinion

Jesus, Joseph, and Mary, Kavorkian and hemlock - I believe someone once said that you can tell about a society by the way they treat their aged. If someone didn't say it, they should. And when they do, well, can you guess what slot the U.S. falls into?
