Gabriel García Márquez’s epic love story gets lost in the translation from page to screen in this spiritless adaptation by writer Ronald Harwood. Javier Bardem’s Florentino and Giovanna Mezzogiorno’s Fermina fall in love at first sight amidst the booming cholera epidemic of early 19th-century Columbia. Yet, due to unfortunate circumstances, their courtship is forbidden. The two go their separate ways, and Fermina marries a studly doctor (Benjamin Bratt) while Florentino has sex with 622 different women. Yes, he counted. Then, after 50 years, fate brings the two lovers together to rekindle a love they waited a lifetime to enjoy. Director Mike Newell’s weak attempt at poignantly juxtaposing thriving love and the deadly disease comes across as an overly dramatic soap opera.
