Love Crime
Not as stylish as the plot warrants and clinically dead twice, for about 20 minutes at a time, Love Crime never becomes the film it should be. For months, a high-powered executive (Kristin Scott Thomas) domineers her assistant, Isabelle (Ludivine Sagnier), professionally and emotionally toying with the young woman who idolizes and loves her. There are times when Isabelle loves her boss’ husband, too. As the mind games escalate, Isabelle eventually snaps and plots a simple murder with a complex alibi. That really should be the most exciting part of the film, but Love Crime is too methodical all the way through to notice much of a difference. A real opportunity for Sagnier (from François Ozon’s Swimming Pool) is mostly wasted, though she gives it her best Hitchcock blonde.
