Drama, War
This movie sounds like it was written by a freshman at Oberlin who was assigned to make a modern-day Socratic dialogue about the Afghan war. It’s heavy on talking-heads sequences and devolves into long speeches in which people repeatedly say things that everyone already knows. Tom Cruise is cast well as a douchebaggish but committed senator who has a plan to turn the tide of war in our favor. Meryl Streep is deliriously awful as the liberal reporter who, in the course of interviewing him, stops to explain the current state of the media and her own history with idealism. Meanwhile, two soldiers are stranded on a rocky ledge, and Robert Redford plays a poli-sci professor who has lots of important feelings.
