While I don't agree with undocumented workers, (for both boarder control and labor abuse reasons) I can not help, but to sympathize with these people who were only innocent children themselves when they were brought to this country by their own parents.
There needs to be special circumstances for children who have been raised here and did not have a choice when their own parents brought them here illegally. More research should have been done to determine the backgrounds of these people in terms of how long they had been in the country and their community involvement. Exceptions should have been, and needed to be made. They should not have been treated like common criminals and the damage done to them and to their families and especially their young children is unconscionable!
That said, I do not believe that we should keep allowing undocumented workers into this country, but the ones already here and that were brought here as minors themselves should be given special consideration. If not, than we ought to consider changing the cry and the promise of Lady Liberty as she calls out to "give me your poor, your tired, your hungry" etc... We either stand for liberty and fair treatment for all within our boarders or we don't!
As a natural born American Citizen (by the grace of God go I) I am ashamed and appalled at the horrendous treatment of these good people who were only trying to make a living in the country that their parents CHOSE to bring them to, before they were too young to have a say. Their stories break my heart! :(
I just hope and pray that we've learned something from all of this...sadly I fear that we haven't:(
